Garage Builder in Virginia Beach, VA

B&B Decks and More builds custom garages for Virginia Beach homeowners, including detached garages, workshops, oversized vehicle storage and attached garage additions. Start with the property and the way you want to use the building: an attractive garage still needs a workable location, vehicle approach and construction plan.

A completed garage build in Virginia Beach

B&B Decks and More completed this ground-up garage in Virginia Beach. The photo shows two front overhead doors, a barn-style roof and upper windows. For a similar new build, plan vehicle parking and decide whether any proposed upper area would be storage or a separately designed room.

Planning budget for a comparable new garage: $55,000–$95,000 (October 2026).

This owner-approved range is for planning a new garage with a similar overall design; it does not report the historical cost of the completed garage pictured. Your written estimate will define the dimensions, site work, foundation, doors, utilities and finishes. The dated written-estimate example elsewhere on this page has not been matched to the photographed garage’s project record and does not establish that project’s final cost.

Can I build a detached garage on my Virginia Beach property?

A detached garage may be possible, but the available yard is only the starting point. Confirm the property’s zoning district, boundaries, easements and applicable development limits before choosing a building footprint. Virginia Beach explains that zoning regulates allowable uses, setbacks and building location, height and size. The answer therefore needs a property review rather than a single setback number for the entire city. See the city’s zoning information.

Bring an existing survey if you have one. Mark the preferred garage location, driveway, trees, utility equipment and any known drainage route. A concept drawing can help compare alternatives, but it does not establish legal boundaries or replace the documents required for approval.

Do I need a permit to build a garage in Virginia Beach?

Virginia Beach lists both attached and detached garages among residential projects requiring permits. The city also says new structures on properties in the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area, flood zones or Southern Rivers Watershed Area may need environmental approval before a building permit. These conditions depend on the parcel; they do not apply equally to every Virginia Beach home. Review the official residential permit guidance when planning your project.

Resolve those checks early. Moving a garage after detailed design can change its approach, roof layout, foundation and utility route. For a waterfront or otherwise regulated site, establish the review path before treating a preferred size as buildable.

For a direct explanation of the separate building, zoning and trade questions, read our Virginia Beach garage permit guide. It includes B&B’s initial planning checklist and inspection handoffs to discuss before work begins. For budget preparation, compare the garage cost examples and written-scope guide.

Choose the garage layout around everyday use

Decisions to make before finalizing a garage plan
Your goalWhat to plan
Park two vehiclesMeasure the vehicles, open-door space, walking route and storage that will remain beside them.
Store a boat or tall vehicleCheck overall length and height, door clearance and the approach with a trailer attached.
Add a workshopReserve room for benches and equipment without turning the vehicle aisle into the work area.
Connect to the houseReview the doorway route, existing roof, floor elevations and how the addition affects the home.

Compare the attached versus detached garage guide before deciding. Door placement matters as much as bay count: a garage that looks right on a plan can be awkward if the approach requires repeated tight turns.

Plan the driveway, drainage and building access together

Start at the street and trace the vehicle’s route to its parked position. Consider the driveway connection, gates, turning room and visibility when backing out. If you plan to store a trailer, show its actual path rather than assuming it will follow the same turn as the tow vehicle.

Then consider how the site behaves during rain. Note low spots, water moving toward the proposed garage and where roof runoff could go. The slab, door threshold, driveway grade and final ground levels need a coordinated design. Raising one surface without considering the surrounding drainage can shift a problem elsewhere.

Construction access is a separate check. Concrete placement, delivery vehicles and equipment need a workable route. Identify fences, landscaping and existing pavement that could affect access, and discuss protection or restoration in the estimate.

If the garage also needs an apron, driveway extension or water-management work, review our concrete driveway services and yard drainage planning before defining the estimate.

A Virginia Beach Written Estimate: See the Included Work

An anonymized October 2026 B&B estimate quoted $41,500 for a 14×24-foot garage (336 square feet), with a monolithic slab and block course, 12/12 roof, 12×8 overhead door and specified fiber-cement exterior finishes. The customer was to supply both the windows and the personnel door for B&B to install; siding painting was excluded.

This is a dated written estimate, not a current fixed package. It has not been matched to the photographed garage’s project record and does not confirm that project’s final cost. Compare the original scope with a larger Chesapeake estimate before comparing totals.

What should a Virginia Beach garage estimate include?

A useful price starts with a defined building and site scope. Compare proposals using the same dimensions, wall height, doors, roof, siding and interior finish. A basic parking garage and a conditioned workshop with substantial electrical needs are different projects even when their footprints match.

  • Site preparation: clearing, demolition if needed, grading and the construction access plan.
  • Foundation and shell: foundation design, concrete, framing, roofing, siding, trim, windows and doors.
  • Connections: driveway work, electrical supply and any other specified utilities.
  • Interior: insulation, wall finishes, lighting, outlets and equipment provisions that are actually included.
  • Project documents: plans, engineering, permit responsibilities, allowances and exclusions.

Use the garage cost calculator for preliminary budgeting. A calculator result cannot account for every property condition and should not be treated as a construction quote.

Garage planning questions

Can a garage have a workshop and still park a vehicle?

Yes, if the layout reserves enough usable space for both. Sketch the bench depth, equipment footprint and walking space with the vehicle parked. Our garage workshop planning guide helps organize the decisions before construction.

How do I choose the garage size?

Measure what will go inside first, including doors, mirrors, equipment and storage. Compare those requirements with our guide to garage sizes for one, two and three cars, then check whether the proposed footprint works on the property.

Can I add living space above the garage?

Treat living space as a separate feasibility decision before design. Zoning, access, utilities and the construction requirements for its intended use must be reviewed; a storage loft should not be assumed suitable for an apartment.
