Garage Building Cost in Hampton Roads: 24×24, 24×30 and 30×40 Planning Guide
The cost to build a garage in Hampton Roads depends on the building, the property and the work included in the proposal. For a starting comparison, B&B’s existing calculator produces the one-story planning amounts below for 24×24, 24×30 and 30×40 footprints. These figures help organize a budget; they do not establish a complete installed package or a maximum project price.
Garage cost planning examples by size
These examples were checked against the live B&B garage cost calculator on October 19, 2026. Each selects a one-story garage, the vinyl-siding baseline and one standard 8×7 overhead door, with the separate electrical, limited-access and permit/planning allowances unchecked. An unchecked allowance does not mean that work is unnecessary or included elsewhere.
| Exterior footprint | Area | Displayed planning amount | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24×24 feet | 576 sq ft | $47,400–$51,200 | Compare the vehicle layout, openings and complete written scope. |
| 24×30 feet | 720 sq ft | $54,000–$58,400 | Decide whether the extra depth serves parking, storage or a workshop. |
| 30×40 feet | 1,200 sq ft | $84,000–$90,800 | Resolve bays, door sizes, roof arrangement, equipment and site access. |
The first number is calculated from the calculator’s existing size/style references and rounded to the nearest $100. The second adds its 8% planning buffer and rounds upward to $100. The underlying references have not been newly validated as construction packages. Foundation, utilities, site work, taxes, finishes and exclusions still need to be established in your written estimate. The baseline door is a pricing assumption, not confirmation that one small door suits every footprint or intended use.
How much does a 24×24 garage cost?
The stated baseline produces a $47,400–$51,200 calculator planning amount for a 24×24 garage. Its 576-square-foot exterior footprint does not provide 576 square feet of clear parking space. Wall thickness, posts, stairs, storage and equipment use some of that area.
Before treating this as a two-car solution, measure both vehicles with doors open and include the route to the house or yard. Decide whether you need two separate overhead doors, one wider opening or another arrangement. Those choices affect the door package and the framing conversation. Use the original 24×24 layout example in our two-car garage dimensions guide to work through usable space.
How much does a 24×30 garage cost?
The same baseline produces a $54,000–$58,400 calculator planning amount for a 24×30 garage. This is a 720-square-foot exterior footprint. Compared with 24×24, it adds 144 square feet, but the building’s orientation and door positions determine where that space is useful.
Sketch the intended parking and work areas before calling the extra depth a workshop. Workbenches, tool storage and equipment need access and operating space. Electrical capacity, lighting, insulation and heating or cooling require their own scope decisions. An unfinished building with extra floor area is a different purchase from a finished, equipped workshop. See our garage workshop planning guide.
How much does a 30×40 garage cost?
The same baseline produces an $84,000–$90,800 calculator planning amount for a 30×40 garage. The 1,200-square-foot footprint does not by itself specify the number of usable bays, wall height, roof system, overhead doors or interior finishes.
Bring the intended layout into the design discussion early. A vehicle lift, tall equipment, multiple large openings or an upper floor can introduce requirements that a footprint-only price cannot resolve. Wider openings also change the remaining wall available for structural support and bracing. Our garage-door header and wall-bracing guide explains the questions to settle with the plans and appropriate design professionals.
What should the cost to build a garage include?
Compare the work behind each total. A material kit, a delivered building, an assembled shell and a complete site-built garage can represent different responsibilities. Our prefab, kit and site-built comparison explains those distinctions.
- Property and approvals: survey/site information, drawings, required engineering, applications, fees and relevant property reviews.
- Site and foundation: demolition, access, excavation, drainage, designed support, concrete floor, anchorage and restoration.
- Structure and enclosure: wall, roof and any upper-floor framing; roofing, flashing, siding, doors, windows and trim.
- Utilities and interior: connections, trenching, electrical work, any plumbing or HVAC, insulation, drywall and finish selections.
- Completion: inspections, closeout, written warranty, allowances, exclusions and the process for approving changes.
Brett Mathis’s custom-home and garage-framing carpentry background brings attention to the construction choices a square-foot total can hide: roof arrangement, large openings, upper-floor use and connections between the foundation, walls and roof. His experience working alongside other construction professionals supports coordination with the plans and following trades. Required engineering remains the responsibility of the appropriately qualified professional.
Virginia and Hampton Roads garage cost questions
How much does it cost to build a garage in Virginia?
A single statewide figure cannot establish your project’s cost. Use the examples above as B&B’s local planning references, then confirm the city or county, site conditions and complete construction scope. A different region, attached addition, foundation, building system or finish level is not automatically comparable.
What changes detached garage cost in Hampton Roads?
Discuss driveway approach, construction access, drainage, ground and elevation conditions, utilities, local approvals and the building design. The need for specific work is property-dependent. For Virginia Beach projects, start with our garage permit planning guide. Other cities and counties have their own review paths.
Are the completed-garage photo budgets the cost of these sizes?
No. The approved budgets beside our completed-garage photographs describe comparable new designs, not confirmed dimensions or historical invoices for those pictured projects. The two dated written estimate examples on our main garage page document different specific scopes. Neither those estimates nor this calculator table is an interchangeable current offer for a new property.
Move from a planning amount to a written garage quote
Send your city, property address, preferred footprint, intended use, door requirements, available survey and photographs of the proposed location and driveway. B&B handles plans and required engineering coordination, permit applications and fees, utilities and inspections within the agreed written proposal. Use the 11-item quote checklist to identify what is included, excluded, an allowance or unresolved.
