Brick and Masonry Porches & Steps in Hampton Roads
Brick and Masonry Porches & Steps in Hampton Roads
A brick porch, concrete porch or masonry front step is a small structure with an important job. It has to carry daily traffic, shed water away from the home, meet the entry at the correct height and create a safe transition to the walkway or driveway.
B&B Decks builds and renovates masonry porch and step systems across Hampton Roads. As a Class A builder, we can coordinate the masonry work with structural repairs, footings, landings, railings, columns, porch roofs, walkways and drainage when the project extends beyond a simple surface repair.

Brick porch, concrete porch or masonry steps?
Homeowners use these terms interchangeably, but they can describe different assemblies. A “brick porch” may be a masonry structure, a concrete porch faced with brick, or brick pavers installed over a prepared base. “Stone steps” may refer to natural-stone treads over masonry or a segmental system. We inspect what is actually supporting the porch before recommending repair or replacement.

When repair may be enough
Localized mortar deterioration, a limited number of loose units or isolated surface damage may be repairable when the foundation and overall geometry remain stable. Repair decisions should consider why the damage occurred. Repointing joints will not correct continuing settlement, poor drainage or movement in the supporting structure.
When replacement deserves consideration
Widespread cracking, repeated movement, major separation from the house, unsafe step geometry or extensive concealed deterioration can make replacement the more responsible option. Replacement also provides an opportunity to improve the landing size, step proportions, railing attachment and water management rather than recreating an entry that never worked well.
Common problems we evaluate
Settlement and separation
Steps or landings that have dropped or pulled away may have inadequate support, compacted fill loss, water-related soil movement or another underlying condition. The visible crack is evidence, not always the cause.
Water at the doorway or foundation
The porch surface and adjoining grade should move water away from the entry. Door thresholds, flashing, downspouts and nearby walks all affect the drainage plan.
Loose brick, stone or caps
Loose masonry can result from moisture, failed joints, movement or an unsuitable bond between materials. We assess the extent of the failure before proposing a cosmetic repair.
Uneven or unsafe steps
Inconsistent riser heights, narrow treads and poorly placed railings make an entry uncomfortable and potentially unsafe. A renovation should address the entire walking path from grade to door.
Materials and finish options
The right finish depends on the home, exposure and supporting assembly. Options can include traditional brick, concrete, natural-stone treads, concrete pavers and compatible combinations. For larger patio-style areas, visit our Hampton Roads paver patio page. For elevated backyard surfaces, see raised patio construction.
Railings, columns and porch roofs
Front-entry projects often cross trade boundaries. A railing needs a reliable attachment; a column may support a porch roof; trim can conceal water damage; and a new landing can change the stair layout. B&B can plan these components as one project when the work involves more than masonry alone.
Our porch and step process
- Existing-condition review: We look at movement, drainage, materials, dimensions and connections.
- Repair-versus-replacement recommendation: We explain whether a limited repair is reasonable or the underlying assembly needs broader work.
- Coordinated scope: We account for masonry, concrete, railings, columns, walks and related carpentry.
- Construction planning: We identify access, demolition, disposal, protection and applicable approval requirements.
- Build and finish: We complete the agreed scope with the entry geometry and water management treated as core requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Can you repair a cracked brick porch?
Possibly. The repair depends on whether the cracking is localized or reflects movement in the supporting structure. We first determine whether a surface repair has a reasonable chance of lasting.
Can you replace porch steps without replacing the whole porch?
Sometimes. The landing, foundation, connections and finished elevations must allow the steps to be separated responsibly. We evaluate the complete entry before narrowing the scope.
Do you install railings with masonry steps?
Yes. We can coordinate railing selection and attachment with the step and landing construction so the railing is not treated as an afterthought.
Where does B&B provide masonry porch and step work?
We serve Hampton Roads, including Williamsburg, James City County, York County, Yorktown, Poquoson, Newport News, Hampton, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Suffolk.
Start with the structure behind the surface
A lasting porch or step project begins with support, dimensions and drainage, not simply choosing brick or stone. Tell B&B what is happening at your entry, and we will help define the right repair, replacement or new-build scope.
