Homeowners use several names for this type of project: raised patio, elevated patio, retaining-wall patio, patio on a slope, raised paver patio or a patio built level with the back door. The common feature is that the finished surface sits above the surrounding grade and needs more planning than a basic ground-level patio.

How a raised patio is supported

A raised patio is not simply extra gravel placed under pavers. The design must account for lateral soil pressure, settlement, water movement, edge restraint and the connection to the house. Depending on the height and site, the project may use engineered retaining-wall units, masonry walls, reinforced concrete, compacted structural fill or a combination of systems.

The right approach depends on the existing grade, soil conditions, access for equipment, finished patio material, nearby foundations and where stormwater can safely discharge. We evaluate those conditions before recommending a construction method.

Raised concrete patios

Poured concrete can create a clean, continuous surface and may be finished with broom texture, color or decorative treatments. The supporting structure, control joints and drainage plan matter just as much as the visible finish.

Raised brick and stone patios

Brick and natural stone can complement traditional Hampton Roads homes. These materials differ in thickness, absorption, jointing and base requirements, so the assembly should be designed around the selected product rather than treated as a cosmetic swap.

Drainage is part of the structure

Water trapped behind a retaining wall or directed toward a foundation can damage an otherwise attractive patio. A raised-patio plan may include free-draining aggregate, drainage pipe, wall drainage outlets, appropriate surface pitch and controlled discharge away from the house. Existing downspouts, low areas and neighboring properties also have to be considered.

Steps, guards and transitions

Elevation creates transitions. We plan stairs, landings and walking paths as part of the layout rather than adding them after the patio size is fixed. Depending on the finished height and configuration, guards or handrails may also be required. When a raised patio meets an existing deck, pool enclosure or covered structure, the elevations and circulation paths should be coordinated from the beginning.

Raised patio or elevated deck?

Neither system is automatically better. A raised patio can provide a substantial masonry appearance and a direct connection to the yard. An elevated deck may be more practical where the height is significant, access below is needed or the site would require extensive retaining construction. Can you build a patio level with my back door?

Often, yes, but the wall system, door clearance, flashing, drainage and finished height must be evaluated first. We will not recommend raising the surface in a way that directs water toward the house.

Can a raised patio be built on a sloped yard?

Sloped yards are one of the primary reasons to consider a raised or terraced patio. The amount of grade change determines whether one retained level, multiple terraces or a deck-and-patio combination makes the most sense.

Do raised patios require a permit?
