Manufactured concrete pavers
Precast concrete pavers are manufactured in controlled shapes, thicknesses, textures and colors. They can imitate cobblestone, brick, flagstone or large-format slabs while providing predictable modular sizes. That flexibility makes them a practical choice for many residential hardscape projects.

- Considerations: products differ in strength and finish quality; color can mellow with exposure; efflorescence may appear; and some owners choose periodic sealing.
- Good questions: Is the selected unit rated for the intended load? Is the finish comfortable for bare feet? What does the manufacturer recommend for joint sand, cleaning and sealing?
Natural stone pavers
Natural stone is quarried rather than molded, so variation is part of the material. Travertine, bluestone, granite, limestone and other stones differ significantly in density, porosity, texture and regional performance. The species and finish matter as much as the words “natural stone.”
- Advantages: genuine color movement, unique pieces and an appearance that can blend naturally with masonry, landscaping and traditional architecture.
- Considerations: thickness and dimensional variation can increase installation complexity; some stones absorb more water or stain more easily; cleft surfaces may be uneven; and suitability around saltwater or pool chemicals varies.
- Good questions: How will this stone perform in the proposed exposure? Is it comfortable and slip-conscious when wet? Are sample pieces representative of the expected variation?
Exterior porcelain pavers
Porcelain pavers are dense, manufactured units designed for exterior use. They can reproduce stone, concrete or wood visuals with consistent dimensions and low water absorption. They are not the same as ordinary indoor tile. Thickness, traction rating, edge profile and installation method must match the outdoor application.
- Advantages: low absorption, resistance to many stains, precise sizing and a wide range of contemporary finishes.
- Considerations: correct support and edge details are critical; cutting requires proper equipment; light or dark colors can still feel hot in sun; and chipped edges can be more visually noticeable.
- Good questions: Is the product explicitly rated for exterior paver use? Will it be installed on a prepared base, mortar system or pedestal system? How are edges, steps and transitions finished?

How to compare materials for your project
Heat and sun exposure
Color, density, texture and exposure affect surface temperature. Do not choose from a small indoor sample alone. Place samples outdoors in the sun at the time of day the space will be used, especially for pool decks and barefoot areas.
Traction when wet
A rough-looking surface is not automatically slip-resistant. Ask for product data appropriate to the use and consider how water, sealers, algae and cleaning practices may change the surface over time.
Maintenance and repair
All outdoor surfaces need cleaning. Joint maintenance, stain response, sealing and the availability of replacement units differ. Purchasing a small quantity of matching spare material can make future repairs less conspicuous.
Base and structural system
The material cannot compensate for an unsuitable base. Ground-level patios, driveways, mortared applications and elevated pedestal systems impose different demands. The entire assembly should be selected for the load, drainage and site conditions.
Which paver is best around a pool?
There is no universal winner. Prioritize wet traction, comfortable texture, heat behavior, coping compatibility, chemical exposure and drainage. A suitable concrete paver, carefully selected natural stone or exterior porcelain paver can each work, but the exact product and detailing determine whether it is appropriate.

Are concrete pavers the same as stamped concrete?
No. Concrete pavers are individual manufactured units installed as a modular surface. Stamped concrete is poured in place and textured before curing. They differ in jointing, repair options, base details and appearance.
Is porcelain tile suitable for an outdoor patio?
Only products specifically rated and detailed for the exterior application should be used. Indoor tile should not be treated as a substitute for exterior porcelain pavers. Confirm thickness, traction, freeze-thaw suitability and the approved installation system.
Does natural stone always cost more?
Not always, but premium stone, sorting, freight, installation labor and waste can raise total project cost. Compare complete installed systems rather than material prices alone.
